Stillwater Nordic Center- Broken Binding Ski Marathon

February 25, 2010

Nordic Skiers were welcomed to the 2nd annual ‘Great American Broken Binding Ski Marathon’ with blue skies and fast conditions on February 21st.  The race was held at Stillwater Nordic Center, 8 miles north of Whitefish.  Race distances included the 48km, 32km, 16km, 3.2km and a fun kids race on the ‘Winkler Loop’ for the tiny tots.

Hamilton resident Annie Creighton, who has won the OSCR in Seeley for the last 10 years, added the Broken Binding title to her list.  She was the overall winner in the 48km race for women, followed by Whitefish resident, Brenda Winkler.

The men were led in 48km race by Ryan Dye, followed by Rich Graves, both of Whitefish.  Full results posted under ‘results’ tab.

Thank you to all of our participants, sponsors and volunteers!  We could not do this without you.

Gravityshots.com captured this unique aerial perspective of the race with this video.  Thank you to Jeff and Adele Scholl!

Glacier Glide: “It was a great day for the Glacier Nordic Ski Team”

January 25, 2010

We had a great turnout at the glacier glide yesterday, nearly 80 skiers competed.  Craig Prather, of Great Northern Cycles, did a great job pulling off this event including massing all of the volunteers and sponsors.  Thanks to Linda Grady and her group of timing volunteers.  Linda used the Glide to test a new state of the art timing system purchased for the Western States Ski Festival to held February 27th and 27th (see events page for more information).

The course was impeccable thanks to Marc Venery, GNC head groomer and his team of helpers.  The chili feed was awesome thanks to Whitefish Lake Restuarant.

We ran a circuit race, a 1 km loop, 1 longer approx. 5 km loop, 3 laps for 10 km, and 5 laps for 20 km.  The course was fast and included some technical uphills and downhills that had you holding on.  It was a great event for both racers and spectators who cheered the racers along every lap throughout the morning.

It was a great day for the Glacier Nordic Ski Team who were at the top of the podeum with 1st place overall wins in 5, 10, and 20 km events.  Abaygail Wambeke and Eric Holdusen came away with the win for the 1st km race.  Anne Miller and Jack Steele took 1st overall for the 10 km distance.  Stella Holt and Connor Gray took first overall in the 5 km race.  Glacier Nordic Ski Team Coaches, Ben Morely and Brenda Winkler came away with the 1st place overall in the 20 km race.  For more results see results page.
