Congratulations Jesse Opel- 2012 Birkie Classic age group winner!

Glacier Nordic Club member Jesse Opel wins the Woman’s 60-64 year old age group division at the 2012 American Birkebeiner. The “Birkie Classic” , the largest cross country ski marathon in North America, is a point to point 54 kilometer race from Cable, WI to Hayward, WI.

Jesse began nordic skiing in Colorado in the 1970′s. She was introduced to her first long distance race in tracks by former Olympian Dick Taylor. She trained for this years race on the Big Mt Nordic Trails, and at the Glacier Nordic Center in Whitefish. She described this years event as a “perfect blue wax day”. Congratulations Jesse to a job well done!

Our February 5th classic race is cancelled due to lack of snow. The golf course will continue to be open when conditions allow, please check our Facebook page and grooming page for updates. Stillwater Nordic Center is also open, so go check them out!

Rob Stern Serigraph Raffle to Benifit the Glacier Nordic Youth Programs

The Glacier Nordic Club is raffling off an original Rob Stern Serigraph to benifit the Glacier Nordic Youth Programs.

Stillwater Nordic has the framed work on display. Ridge Walker is an 11 Color, mixed media serigraph, on hand made Native American bark paper. RidgeWalker measures 19 X 10 inches with 7 artist’s proofs and 27 edition pieces.

The drawing to be held at the end of the season teams banquet. Date and place TBD. All ticket sales and stubs need to be returned to Chris Holt or box. 403 by March 10th.

Tickets are 5.00 each or 5 for 20.00. The tickets are available at the Kiosk or the you can purchase from the team kids have them – Grady, Holt and Grey and at Stillwater Nordic.

Glacier Glide, January 22nd, Moved to Izaak Walton Inn

Glacier Glide will be in Essex this year regardless of snow in Whitefish. We will have 1, 3, 9 and 18k freestyle races with a chili feed afterwards! Registration is from 9-10am with races starting at 10:30am. We hope to see you at the Glide!

Jr Jets & Chet Hope starting on Blanchard Lake

Chet Hope is starting up this Saturday (the 14th)! We’ll be skiing Blanchard Lake where Jets are now practicing as well. There are 12″ of ice – very safe – please let your kids know that. There is no toilet at the site right now – so please have kids go before.

Directions: To the FW&P Public Fishing Access on Blanchard Lake – From Whitefish take either 7th Street or 2nd Street West to Karrow,turn south on Karrow, then right on Blanchard Lake Drive, (just south of the car repair shop), go the the dead end and park on the pavement. Walk down the access road to the Lake. The parking lot at the bottom only holds 6 or so cars and the road down is icy so please park above. Be careful walking down itis icy but there is gravel along the sides. PLEASE DO NOT LET KIDS SKI DOWN – THE GRAVEL WILL RUIN THE BASES..

Looks like snow is finally coming to Whitefish; hopefully we’ll be out on the Golf Course soon! For now, Blanchard is a wonderful option for us.

Whitefish Credit Union Provides Funding for Glacier Nordic Club Youth Programs

The Whitefish Credit Union is providing funding for new equipment and scholarships for Glacier Nordic Club’s Junior Jets and Chet Hope Youth League programs.

Credit Union president Jim Kenyon said “Whitefish Credit Union is happy to have the opportunity to assist with such a worthwhile project. Our future rests in our children – let’s keep them active and involved – both mentally and physically – in the NW Montana lifestyle that we all enjoy”.

The Junior Jets, for ages 7-11, begins Tuesday, January 3, and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. through February. Jets are given the opportunity to learn how to skate and classic ski, including double polling, up hills, down hills, turns and balance, often using games to learn skills.

Beginning Saturday, January 7, the Chet Hope Youth League will meet for seven Saturdays from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Children ages 4 through teens will learn and improve classic ski skills through participating in cooperative games and encouraging activities coached by trained volunteer coaches. Both the Junior Jets and Chet Hope Youth League meet at the Glacier Nordic Center, which is operated by the Club, at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course. The Club also offers additional educational programs for youth skiers, including a traveling competition team and clinics for masters.
